What's the idea?
The idea is to prevent problem of marine fouling without poisoning the sea. Since the first days of sea transport, marine growths, barnacles, algae and mussels have been a problem. Wooden ships used to solve the problem by covering the hulls with copper plate. Copper isotopes are poisonous and as it corrodes it kills any life which tries to grow on it. Unfortunately it also kills other marine life. Copper bottomed vessels have been banned in the Mediterranean sea, because it kills so much marine life.
