Agriculture
Biofilm occurs anywhere where water accumulates. This slimy layer causes a build-up of proteins that are produced by bacteria. Biofilm is the feeding ground as well as protection for all kinds of bacteria and can multiply at a phenomenal rate. For agriculture, biofilm formation can be problematic as deposits can block pipes.
Industrial Applications
Water that circulates in taps and pipes, in the main, contains various salts (Chlorine, Sulphates and Carbonates), as well as dissolved gases (Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide) and metal ions (Iron and Manganese ions). The presence of these pollutants can and do cause a series of problems.
Industrial Marine
On a seagoing vessel there is a large amount of cooling required. This is done traditionally by using seawater, bringing the water into the vessel through the sea chest and then using this seawater for cooling. In principle, a Boxcooler is a pipe bundle, also known as tubular heat exchangers, which in turn sits directly in the seawater. The seawater can be used directly for cooling different processes on a vessel. These pipe bundles are installed in special compartments that are open to the sea, so it follows that at all times seawater surrounds the tubes of the box cooler. The process results in huge amounts of seawater entering the vessel and because of this, the boxcooler will be at risk regarding fouling. Barnacles, mussels, algae and many other types of shellfish grow on the tubes of the Boxcooler. This directly affects the units heat transference function.
Recreational Marine
A clean hull is extremely important! Anyone who owns a boat is familiar with this problem : Fouling or growth of all kinds of organisms are the main culprit.
